Newly Opened Museums (2021-2022)

China Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum
 China National Arts and Crafts Museum
 
      After three years of renovation, China National Arts and Crafts Museum and China Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum opened to the public on Feb 6, 2022. The opening ceremony was divided into 7 sections, showcasing arts and crafts since 1949, guqin (a seven-string traditional Chinese instrument), musical instruments and scores, Dunhuang murals, traditional Chinese opera, seal-cutting, and Chinese New Year paintings. 

      The Museum, as a new cultural landmark, stands on the northern part of the Central Axis of Beijing. Designated as a venue for collecting and displaying valuable objects of Chinese arts and crafts, this first-ever national-level museum dedicated to Chinese arts and crafts as well as the country's intangible cultural heritage will become an important window promoting China's invaluable national culture.
 
Museum of the Communist Party of China

      The Museum of the Communist Party of China is a site devoted to permanent and comprehensive exhibitions of the Party's history. Ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of China, the Museum has opened in Beijing, capturing the attention of the country.

      Believing that the Party's history is the most vivid and convincing textbook, the CPC Central Committee, with Xi Jinping at its core, decided to build a museum of the CPC's history in late 2017.

      On May 5, 2021, after nearly 1,000 days of construction, the Museum of the CPC was officially completed. Details of the museum are full of historic connotations.

Central Gifts and Artifacts Center
 
      This is an important project to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China - Central Gifts and Artifacts Center.

      It displays more than 670 representative pieces and sets of gifts received and presented by Party and state leaders on diplomatic occasions since the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. It showcases the great journey taken by Chinese Communists--mainly represented by Comrades Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, and Xi Jinping- and the splendid achievements they have made in launching and developing the diplomatic cause of the PRC. In particular, it demonstrates the great endeavors and historic achievements of the CPC Central Committee with President Xi Jining at the core since the 18th PC National Congress in comprehensively promoting Major Country Diplomacy with Chinese characteristics, advancing the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
 
Shaanxi Archaeological Museum
 
      Recently, construction was officially completed on China's first archaeological museum, the Shaanxi Archaeology Museum, which opened to the public on a trial basis on April 28, 2022.

      As of 2020, there are 7.74 million cultural relics and 319 museums in Shaanxi, which include most of the important archaeological discoveries in Shaanxi. The Shaanxi Archaeological Museum is a major platform to showcase the cultural relics, based on more than 60 years of archaeological excavations by the Shaanxi Archaeological Research Institute. For the first time, these precious cultural relics unearthed from major archaeological excavation projects will be systematically displayed to the audience on a large scale. 
 
China Grand Canal Museum
 
      China Grand Canal Museum is a modern and comprehensive facility dedicated to cultural heritages preservation, academic research and exhibition, and leisure experiences. The museum now has more than 10,000 pieces (sets) of various cultural relics, including ancient books, paintings, inscriptions, ceramics, metal ware, and miscellaneous items reflecting the theme of the canal from the Spring and Autumn period (770BC–403 BC) to the present.

      Opened to the public on June 16, 2021, the museum is home to 11 permanent exhibitions that showcase the history and culture of the Grand Canal and the benefits it has brought to people.
 
Suzhou Museum (West) 
 
      The Suzhou Museum West was officially opened on the morning of Sept. 29, 2021. In the museum, there are not only the long history of the Kingdom of Wu (229 - 280), the ingenious Suzhou traditional skills and the splendid art of calligraphy and painting, but also professional exhibition halls such as international exchanges and exploration experiences, allowing visitors to have a comprehensive and three-dimensional understanding of Suzhou's past and future.

      The permanent exhibition “Ode to Gusu: Exhibition of Suzhou History” at the General History Exhibition Hall displays more than 2,000 pieces (sets) of cultural relics including a sword of King Yumo of Wu and a Jun kiln drum nail three-foot wash, vividly showing Suzhou’s history of nearly 10,000 years from the Paleolithic Period to about 1911 AD. The one-year exhibition “Rome: City and Empire” at the International Cooperation Hall features over 200 masterpieces of the British Museum, which marks the beginning of the 4-year exhibition cooperation between the Suzhou Museum and the British Museum. And the Calligraphy and Painting Hall is devoted to ancient and modern paintings and calligraphy works by local artists.

The New Zhengzhou Museum

      A brand-new cultural landmark is about to bloom in the western district of Zhengzhou. The new museum project has a total construction area of 147,000 square meters and a building height of 62 meters. It is a large-scale museum nationwide. The museum has nearly 60,000 pieces of cultural relics, involving more than 20 categories such as bronze ware, porcelain, painting and calligraphy. 

Hong Kong M+ Museum

      Hong Kong’s swanky new M+ museum is set to open on Friday amid controversy over politics and censorship.

      M+ boasts 183,000 square feet (17,000 square meters) of exhibition space, 33 galleries and over 6,400 works in its collection that range from modern and contemporary art to architecture and moving images. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, M+ aims to put Asia on the global map for art and was built to rival London’s Modern Tate and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

China Cartoon and Animation Museum

      China Cartoon and Animation Museum might become another calling card of Hangzhou. Opening its doors to the public on June 26, 2021, the museum has a collection of over 20,000 items associated with cartoons and animations, including original drafts, play manuscripts, historical materials, journals, and models. It aims to present and interpret the 100-year history and broad prospects of the Chinese animation industry.

      In addition to exhibition halls, theaters, cinemas, libraries, audio-visual rooms, and e-sports rooms have been built in the China Cartoon and Animation Museum to better serve the museum’s purposes in public education and cultural services.

      To better engage the public, the museum will also hold various events, including stage performances, cosplay activities, e-sports competitions, and educational programs.

The New Hall of Hubei Provincial Museum

      Hubei Provincial Museum, located in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, opened a new exhibition hall on Monday, with its most famous exhibits moved to the new location.The museum is one of the best known in China, with more than 240,000 items in the collection and nearly 1,000 top state-level historic and cultural relics, according to the institution.

      The new hall features six themed exhibitions, one of which includes its famed set of chime bells, the largest ever unearthed in China. It was found in 1978 in the tomb of Marquis Yi, a ruler of the Zeng State during the Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BC). Another themed exhibition is dedicated to the Sword of Goujian, which was named after the king of the state of Yue during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). With the new exhibition hall, the area of the Hubei Provincial Museum now totals 113,800 square meters, with around 36,000 square meters of exhibition area.
